Is a coconut a fruit or a vegetable?

A coconut is a fruit. More specifically, it is a drupe, which is a type of fruit that has a hard outer layer (exocarp) and a fleshy middle layer (mesocarp) surrounding a hard seed (endocarp). In the case of a coconut, the outer layer is the hairy brown shell, the middle layer is the white flesh, and the hard seed is the coconut itself.

While coconuts are sometimes referred to as nuts, they are not true nuts botanically speaking. Rather, they are classified as drupes due to their structure and the way they develop.
