How is vacuum created in a vacuum distillation tower

Vacuum is created in a vacuum distillation tower by using a vacuum pump to lower the pressure inside the distillation apparatus. There are several types of vacuum pumps used for vacuum distillation, including rotary vane pumps, liquid ring pumps, and dry screw pumps.

The vacuum pump is typically connected to the distillation apparatus, such as a distillation flask or column, through a series of pipes or hoses. The pump works by creating a negative pressure in the system, which causes the air and other gases to be drawn out of the system, thereby reducing the pressure inside the apparatus.

As the pressure inside the apparatus decreases, the boiling point of the liquid also decreases, which allows for distillation to occur at lower temperatures, thereby minimizing the potential for degradation of the compound being distilled.

The vacuum level required for a particular vacuum distillation process depends on the specific characteristics of the compound being distilled, including its boiling point, vapor pressure, and thermal stability. The vacuum is adjusted accordingly to achieve the desired separation and purity of the product.
